Concert Shirt Of The Day May 31st (Roger Waters)

Today's t-shirt is from the first time I saw original bass player of Pink Floyd, Roger Waters in concert. This show was in 2007 at Rexall Place in Edmonton where Roger did the album "Dark Side Of The Moon" in its entirety. An amazing show this was too. I went to this show with my friend A-Bomb, we both did psychedelics and tripped out on an evening of wicked music. Because we were both bugging out after the show, we walked from the Coliseum to Whyte Avenue after the concert. Good times!!!

Anvil Live In Edmonton May 27th 2011

Well, now that my head has stopped pounding and my ears stopped ringing, time for my review of the Anvil show at The Starlite Room Friday evening.

This was my first time seeing Anvil in concert. After 27 years of going to shows, I finally got the chance to see them. And it was worth the wait. What a great time my buddy Leo and I had at the show. Anvil had a good turn out, probably around 400 people. Lots of old school metal heads in attendance.

We missed the opening band, not even sure who it was. But got there in time to grab a cold one and get to the front of the stage as Anvil came on. Nice to see the response Anvil got after doing this for 34 years and, just now finally getting the recognition they deserve. Anvil played for an hour and a half playing lots of the old stuff and some new stuff from their new album "Juggernaut Of Justice", they played the title song as well as "Fuken Eh!". And of course Lips,Glenn Five and Robb Reiner played lots of old stuff, songs I recall and knew were Mothra, that was a fun one, 666 does it get more metal than that, oh ya it do, Forged In Fire had the crowd banging and singing along, they closed out the set with there biggest hit Metal On Metal before coming back for a encore, which I don't recall which song it was. Drummer Robb Reiner was awesome as was Lips singing his heart out and looking like he was having the time of his life, always smiling and telling some great stories. The new guy, bass player Glenn Five was excellent, the new guy, and that's after being in Anvil for 15 years. These guys just don't give up. Horns up to the boys. A really fun show, and hoping it's not another 20 some years before they come through town again. Good times!!!

Lead singer, guitar player Lips.

Bass player Glenn Five.

Lips again.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a decent picture of drummer Robb Reiner as he is just way to active, pounding the shit out of the drums.

The Details at Permanent Records 05/27/2011

Friday night before heading out to the Anvil show, I caught Winnipeg band The Details play a free show at Permanent Records here in Edmonton on Whyte Ave.

I had never heard them before, but thought what the hell it is a free show, might as well go check them out. I was quite surprised by how good they were. They play rock n' roll in the stream of say Coldplay with a bit more edge. The band consists of drummer Shaun Gibson, Jon Plett on lead guitar and vocals, bass player Keli Martin and guitarist Sean Vidal. The Details have a new album "Lost Art" coming out on May 31st. They also have 2 previous albums and an E.P.

All and all I enjoyed there 40 minute set. The Details will be playing here again on June 3rd at The Haven Social Club with Windsor, Ontario band Michou and then again on June 4th at the same venue playing with Victoria, B.C. band Fish & Bird.

Meet and Greet with Anvil

Wow, just got back from the meet and greet with the old school metal heads Anvil at Axe Music in Edmonton. That was tough, I got there plenty early figuring there would be a few people in line. Well, I got there about 30 minutes early and to my surprise no one there yet. I had to ask if the Anvil signing was still on. Yes, was her answer. I lined up, that's after I met them out back while I was having a cold one. That is once I did know the thing was still on. here my paparazzi picture, lol.

Robb Reiner behind Axe Music.

While waiting in the store, I ran into lead guitarist Lips, he was nice enough to say hi and shake my hand. After saying, "what the fuck, where are the other guys". He then said to me," can't help but look at guitars in here, it would be like being in a whore house blindfolded if you didn't have a look".. That made me laugh, Lips is truly a real down to earth guy, you can't help but feel comfortable around the guy.

Finally the group gathered, Lips, Robb Reiner and bass player Glenn Five. Shitty deal, there is next to no one at the meet and greet, about a dozen people. Fuck, did I ever feel bad for the guys. Lips was cool through it all though. He took the time to talk to me a bit, signed my Hard N' Heavy album, made a comment about that, and listened to me when I told him about my favorite part of the movie: Anvil The Story.

I asked the guys if they would do the song "Smoking Green". Robb was quick to say, no, it's not on the set list, shitty deal. I would love to hear them do that song tonite.

It was cool to meet the guys, too bad about the terrible turn out. Could be to lack of advertising, the only was I knew about it was a post on their facebook page mentioning it 3 weeks ago. There was no ads in the weeklies, newspapers or radio ads, nothing on the Axe website or Anvil's. Maybe that had something to do with no one there. And it was in the afternoon, when most people have to work. I know I did, but booked the afternoon off, so that I would go and meet the guys. I am glad I did. Looking forward to the show this evening at The Starlite Room.

While in line.

Lips, such a cool guy!!!

After the line up.

Now off to Permanent Records to see a free show with the band, The Details from Winnipeg.

Concert Shirt Of The Day May 23rd (Corb Lund)

Today's t-shirt is from the eighth time I saw Corb Lund in concert. This show was in 2008 at Rexall Place in Edmonton. Corb Lund is a local musician that used to play in a metal band called the smalls, then went on to do the country music thing, which has really taken off. This was his biggest local show he has played, playing to close to 6,ooo people. Corb was touring for his album "Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier!" and the name of the tour was Rattling Sabres. This home town show was recorded and is available on DVD "Live at Edmonton Coliseum". I went to this show with my buddy Hurl.

The opening act for this show was supposed to be Todd Snider, but he cancelled due to border problems. Instead Luke Doucet and the White Falcon opened and also put on a great show.

Also at this show I bought a cool souvenir, a Corb Lund comic book.
